This is a quick and easy recipe for biscuits – enough for a large family. If you don’t have to feed 11 people, you’ll probably want to cut this recipe in half or into fourths.
Preheat oven to 450 F.
In a bowl mix:
- 8 cups flour (can use all white, all wheat, or any combination)
- 4 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1 Tbsp. salt
In a four-cup liquid measuring cup, stir together:
- 1/2 cup oil or melted butter
- 3-1/2 cups milk
Pour liquid ingredients over dry ingredients. Stir well with a wooden spoon, until a thick dough is formed. You’ll have to play with this texture depending on the type of biscuits you want. If you want drop biscuits, use a little more liquid. If you want to roll biscuits out, use a little less.
Drop 24 biscuits onto sheet. OR pat out to about 1/2-3/4 inch thick and cut into 24 biscuits. I usually pat this out into a rectangle, and use a pizza cutter to cut into 24 squares. It’s a little faster than cutting into rounds and re-rolling the scraps. Bake at 450 F for 15 minutes or until golden brown on top. You may want to switch the trays around half way through the baking so everything is evenly browned.
I like to use this to make a homemade “McDonald’s” breakfast. Easy, crowd-pleasing recipes are some of the frugal ideas that work for me!
Update 10/2010: My 14 year old son loves to make these biscuits regularly – here’s a picture of some leftovers from a recent batch of drop biscuits made with white flour and homemade sprouted flour.

This recipe looks great! Do you think the dough would freeze well, or would it be better to bake the biscuits and then freeze those instead? THANKS!
I’ve never frozen the dough, or frozen the baked biscuits, so I don’t know what it would do to the texture. We usually make these fresh since they are so easy. Overall, I think it would be better to bake the biscuits first, then freeze. It would depend, too, on what type of flour you are using. If you experiment with this, let me know your results!
OK, I finally got around to trying these today. I did it a bit differently though. Instead of milk I used buttermilk and ended up adding about 1/2 cup more, buttermilk being thick and all. Also I forgot to set the timer on the oven and then got interrupted by boys who found a rattlesnake and had to go take photos after they got it dead! Then I came right back in and set the timer for a bit, so in the end the timing was just a guess. But the biscuits were a huge hit! And oh.so.easy compared to the old timey way I WAS doing it. Never again. Thanks for the EASY method!
I’m glad it was a hit – and easy!
Using the pizza cutter to make the biscuits fast is a great hint! I really should get more adventurous with other grains in my biscuits though!
Your biscuits look wonderful, it looks like a great recipe. I will have to try it.
Thank you for sharing.
Looks easy and yummy, never had much success with biscuits but this seems to be easy enough that I can make it!
Just made your biscuits again today for lunch. Actually, I printed it out and put it in my binder, only to realize that somehow it doesn’t say how many Tablespoons of baking powder to use. I know (I think I know) that it should say 4. That’s what I used and it worked, but correct me if I got it wrong. Anyway, since I was here I had a look around and saw that button for Mathtacular and you know me and math, so I had to go find out. Looks very intriguing. But I want to know, do you use it? Is it LOTS of help? Will it help Rowdy, Slim and Sally Mae understand the stuff I don’t GET and hate with most every fiber of my very being? Maybe it’s ok if I don’t teach math anymore.
Thank you so much for catching this! I did some formatting yesterday and added a picture to the post – must have accidentally deleted the amount of baking powder – yikes! Thanks!
As for Mathtacular – yes, we use and love it. I’m writing a review post about it that will include all the children’s opinions, too.
we serve bread with just about every meal!
