Old Yeller Breakfast

The Lord is so amazing – He works His will through our weakness! At times, I have been weak in the area of organization and planning. By God’s grace, many of my desperate attempts to redeem a self-inflicted situation actually turn around and yield surprisingly positive results.

This past Saturday was our city’s annual parade. The children were all excited about going – but we all slept in! I had expected to wake early enough to fix a decent breakfast. Let’s see… milk, bread, honey, raisins – voila! I cut up two loaves of homemade wheat bread into cubes. The cubes went into bowls and were sprinkled with a ration of raisins, drizzled with raw honey, and doused in raw milk. The troops were summoned – and the curious questions and comments began. The phrase most often repeated was, “Hey, just like Old Yeller!”

Ah, yes! I remember way back when my children first saw the movie. Some had asked me several times to have a meal “just like Arliss with the bread crumbled in the milk?” Sure, sometime. It’s not the usual meal I think of making, even for a pioneer-minded person like myself. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. However, I have found that desperation is the mother of invention. Or is that supposed to be necessity? Both work for me!

So our newly-dubbed Old Yeller Breakfast is here to stay. Everyone totally forgot their manners, mumbling, “Wow, this is SO good!” while they were chewing. It was also filling – we had two bowls of leftovers that were happily munched on after the parade.
