Homemade Iwo Jima Memorial

This past July 4th, our whole family wasn’t feeling very well. We were getting ready to have our meal, and I realized we hadn’t decorated – at ALL!  So I asked if anyone had a flag.  We had no vases where it could fit.  One child got a lump of red clay, and I found a blue cup.  We were admiring our little centerpiece when one child ran off and came back with army men.  Everyone yelled, “IWO JIMA! Cool!”

P7040035children's Iwo Jima memorial with clay and army menNaturally, my homeschooled children then started a lively discussion about the placement of the army men not being accurate.  Some had to get encyclopedias and check out the real picture, while others reenacted the poses… :-)   I love it when homeschooling just happens!
