Sibling Squabbles? Solve Some By “Casting Lots”

Lately I’ve been blessed with 3 of my children who are actually quite eager to do their homeschool math lessons each day.  We had taken a break from their regular curriculum to focus on fact memorization.  They mastered what I set out for them, and so were “allowed” to do their math again.

This past Saturday (yes, Saturday!) they asked to do math again.  After the first child was finished at the computer, the other two children were quarreling about who was next.  I was on the phone with a friend when they came to me for help in “solving” their squabble.

I listened for about 5 seconds, then grabbed an idea out of thin air.

“Since you can’t decide who is going to go first, go get some dice.  Whoever rolls the highest number does their math first.”

Their eyes brightened, they ran off, and next thing I knew one child was happily working on the computer while the other was cheerfully waiting their turn.

Afterward I remembered some verses:

Casting lots causes contentions to cease, and keeps the mighty apart. Proverbs 18:18

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. Proverbs 16:33

I’m not suggesting parents do this ALL the time, but in this particular situation, it definitely worked for me!
