This was another fun review for my children, since every single one of them loves to draw. I’ve already posted some of their pencil and pastel drawings. A few of my older children watched as well, some admittedly thinking they wouldn’t learn anything! They were surprised…
We were able to view the first DVD from See the Light’s Art Class, “The Basics” where we learned:
- what makes a drawing
- what tools to have on hand in our drawing “toolkit”
- different line qualities
- contour drawing
- contours and composition – defined and explained
- how to draw what you “see” instead of what you “know”
My children practiced contour drawing with apples, oranges, and ended up with doing a contour drawing of a shoe. The children who were most interested were my 4, 7, and 9 year olds.
The bonus lesson included on the DVD showed chalk artist Gloria Kohlmann doing a fantastic chalk drawing from start to finish. Several of my children kept saying “whoa” and “neat” and “I want to watch that again and try it!”
The other neat element in these DVDs – done by master artist Pat Kneply – is how she weaves in some basic Bible verses and truths in the context of each lesson. It wasn’t done in the manner of “here’s the art lesson and now we will have our Bible lesson” – it flowed naturally along with her conversation. Pat’s style is vivacious and encouraging, and my children really enjoyed it. I’m a little sad that my cameras were on the fritz and I could barely get one decent picture – my 9 year old did an amazing contour drawing of a shoe on her first try. This is the child who normally complains that she can’t draw as well as her older siblings, and often gives up in frustration. Watching these videos, she persevered and succeeded – much to her (and my) delight.
I’m planning on getting the rest of the Art Class DVDs as soon as I am able. The set only costs $99 and has 36 lessons – perfect for watching one lesson a week, using other days for drawing practice. For my family, when you consider that all 9 of my children can participate in these classes (Pat calls them “club meetings”) – this thorough art curriculum becomes very cost-effective for me. For more information, See The Light has a wonderful website where you can see all the products they carry, and they also have a Facebook page.
